Malala Yousafzai, the schoolgirl shot and almost killed by the Taliban for campaigning for girls’ education, has been presented with a top Amnesty award.

Malala was flown from Pakistan to the UK for treatment after being shot in the head last October. She now lives in Birmingham.

Receiving the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience award in Dublin last night, the 16-year-old said: “I want to live in a world where free, compulsory education is available everywhere to every child.”

Bono, who handed over the award, spoke of her “once in a century kind of courage”.
