Will Ferrell Saves The Emmys

Sunday night’s Emmys were thoroughly weird and a little depressing, but the show finished strong, thanks to a hilarious bit by Will Ferrell.

The actor came out to announce both the winners of Best Comedy series and Best Drama series wearing shorts and a t-shirt, and was accompanied by his three young sons.

“Helen Mirren and Maggie Smith dropped out at the last second and they called me literally 45 minutes ago, and I couldn’t find childcare, OK? We had a soccer game, there was a neighbor’s birthday, a nut allergy, I didn’t have time to do my hair. It doesn’t matter, it’s great to be here," Ferrell began.

Then he turned to his kids. “You have to go to the bathroom? I asked you backstage if you had to go to the bathroom OK? You’re just gonna have to hold it, OK? This is the Emmys, don’t blow this for me, alright guys?”

Ferrell nailed the glorious, yet simple bit. Unfortunately, critics are saying the Emmys was a bust.

As the Chicago Tribune points out, the problem seemed to be that the show featured ‘In Memoriam’ tributes throughout, so every time the show was fun, then a sad moment came...

And Variety points out the winners were played off the stage too quickly during their acceptance speeches, giving the show no spontaneity.

So, Will Ferrell as next year’s host? Just throwing it out there.
