Are Afros A Political Statement Or Simply A Hairstyle? (VIDEO)

WATCH: Are Afros Always A Political Statement?

Afros are making a comeback! Well let's be honest, they really didn't go anywhere. But thanks to the natural hair movement, Dante de Blasio's headline grabbing hair and a slew of stars embracing their curls -- Solange Knowles, Oprah and Viola Davis, to name a few -- the voluminous hairstyle is certainly back in the spotlight.

It wasn't too long ago that those halos of hair were symbols of radical thinking and militancy during the Civil Rights era. These days, folks seem to be rocking Afros as a form of self expression as well as a celebration of au naturale beauty and diversity.

HuffPost Live tackled the topic on Monday that explored everything from the meanings behind the resurgence of the Afro to why the hairstyle makes some people uncomfortable.

"Our hair is a repository for history, hysteria, passion and progress," Michaela Angela Davis, editorial brand manager for BET and image activist, said during the segment.

In short, as times change -- politically, socially and culturally -- so does the conversation about how we rock our hair and why.
