How do you follow up an intense performance in Filly Brown? With a lighthearted romantic comedy, of course! That seems to be Gina Rodriguez’ philosophy, with news of her new film "Sleeping With The Fishes."

Fishes still focuses on the American Latino experience, placing Gina in the middle of an overprotective Brooklyn familia. And keeping with the rom com formula, her character soon falls for a hunky guy from a very different background.

One other interesting facet of Fishes is that it portrays a Latino/Jewish household. Director Nicole Gomez Fisher based it on her own multicultural upbringing and felt the plot was very relevant to modern times.

“There’s so much of that side we don’t see in Hollywood,” Nicole told Latino Review. “Being half Jewish, we grew up with Christmas trees but had Jewish ornaments.”

And interestingly enough, Rodriguez has some Jewish ancestry too.

“It was so interesting to play a Latina Jew and we don’t see that very often,” she explained. “My grandfather is a French Jew and my sister and her kids are fully Jewish.”

CORRECTION: This article's headline has been changed to reflect that the movie has already premiered at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival. Also, a previous version of this article incorrectly stated the movie will arrive to theaters later this year.
