The attorney for the 17-year-old girl allegedly caught shoplifting with a dead fetus inside her shopping bag at a New York City Victoria's Secret said that the teen has been receiving death threats via the Internet, the New York Daily News reports.
Genay Ann Leitman, Tiona Rodriguez's defense attorney, said that Rodriguez's mother informed her that the threats were coming primarily via Facebook.
Before it was deactivated, Rodriguez's Facebook page offered a small insight into the teen's life. Her recent posts included a status about a job interview, a picture of herself kissing her 2-year-old son, and another of herself with a friend.
However, one status posted on Oct. 16, the day that Rodriguez was arrested at Victoria's Secret, stands out: "these Cramps SON."
Rodriguez's Facebook page had also become a focal point online for expressions of condemnation.
"This is what u call a hoodrat (sic) at its finest!! her reasons for doing it dont f-in matter," wrote one user, according to the International Business Times. "if didnt want to get pregnant she should have closed those tired dirty legs of her or go to the free clinic and get condoms."
But not all the messages posted to her page were negative. "I know we haven't spoke much since I left charter, but no matter what happens, keep your head high and your spirits even higher..." wrote someone who identified himself as a former classmate, according to Hollywood Life. "God bless you, your mother and your son."
Rodriguez and a friend who was with her at Victoria's Secret were both charged with petty larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. The two girls appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on Saturday and were released without bail. Their court date is set for Dec. 10.
Rodriguez does not currently face any charges in the death of the baby.
Assistant District Attorney Robert Hettleman, with the child abuse unit of the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, told the court on Saturday that his office is waiting to file additional charges, according to the Daily Beast.
