Ken Cuccinelli, the Republican candidate for governor in Virginia, has lost to his Democratic rival, Terry McAuliffe.
McAuliffe was backed by such big-name Democrats as President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Cuccinelli, a tea party favorite, had the backing of GOP rockstars like Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).
Cuccinelli's loss is a blow to tea party Republicans, who most Americans have blamed for the recent government shutdown.
