Alfred Chiodo, a top aide to New York City Public Advocate-elect Letitia James, was found hanged in his Brooklyn apartment on Thursday, The Associated Press reports.

Chiodo, 57, worked with James for more than eight years and was her urban-affairs director when she served as councilwoman.

James skipped a party in her honor at the Somos Conference Thursday night after being informed of Chiodo's death.

Chiodos death is under investigation by the NYPD. It is unclear if his death was a suicide.

Correction: A previous version of this article included a quote from a 37-year-old Monique Robinson, who The New York Post claimed was Letitia James' niece. A member of James' staff has informed HuffPost that Robinson is not related to James, nor is she employed by her.
