Iyanla Vanzant Shares Her Story Of Surviving Domestic Abuse (VIDEO)

How Iyanla Survived Domestic Abuse

When spiritual life coach Iyanla Vanzant met Janetria, a woman who says she's in an abusive marriage, the story hit close to home. On "Iyanla: Fix My Life," Iyanla shares her personal experience of living through an abusive relationship and the turning point that finally made her realize she had to get out.

"After I got hit in my head with a bed slat, I woke up at three o'clock in the morning and something said to me, 'If you don't leave here now, he's going to kill you,'" Iyanla says. "And I creeped out of the bed and I got a bag of clothes for each of my kids and one for me. And I left."

"I had nowhere to go, I had no money to get there -- I didn't even care," she says. "But I had to be willing to lose everything to gain it all."

By the end of Iyanla's first day with Janetria, she can see she's been locked in an abusive relationship for years. But whether she chooses to stay with her husband or they go their separate ways is ultimately up to them.

"I'm not advocating at all for the ending of your marriage; I'm advocating for the beginning of your life," Iyanla says.

"Iyanla: Fix My Life" airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET at on OWN.
