Among all the things our culture tells women to worry about when it comes to their bodies -- from being thin to eliminating body hair and cellulite -- the "thigh gap" is one of the most ridiculous.
That's why we love vlogger Taylor Adele Smith's lighthearted video, which explains how to get a "thigh gap" without actually modifying your entire skeleton. Though it's popularly believed that losing weight will create a thigh gap on any person, whether or not a woman has a "gap" is actually related to her underlying body structure. Because -- pro tip! -- your hip width and pelvic shape will stay the same, no matter how much weight you lose.
Smith's first tip to trick people into believing your skeleton has rearranged itself? Hold a soccer ball in-between your legs, because "this will hold your thighs apart without you having to do it yourself." Because nothing is sexier than a lady waddling around town with sports equipment between her thighs.
Smith isn't the only person who has spoken out against the thigh gap "trend." In October, plus-size model Robyn Lawley shared her views on the subject in an op-ed for the Daily Beast, after Facebook commenters criticized her body shape:
The truth is I couldn’t care less about needing a supposed “thigh gap.” It’s just another tool of manipulation that other people are trying to use to keep me from loving my body. Why would I want to starve and weaken my natural body size? I’m not saying women who have it naturally are unattractive. But I would have to change my entire frame just to achieve something that seems so trivial.
We're personally sick of the idea that women who don't naturally have said "gap" should be modifying their bodies. Gap or no gap, far or thin, your thighs are fine just the way they are.
