Jennifer Lawrence: 'It Should Be Illegal To Call Somebody Fat'

Jennifer Lawrence thinks that in this day and age, when there are regulations on things like sex and profanity, it should be against the law to call someone fat.

The Oscar winner sat down with Barbara Walters for the “Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013" special and discussed the topic of judging women's bodies. As a major celebrity, Lawrence has had to deal with her fair share of critics in the media. Those critics, she says, are out of line.

"Why is humiliating people funny?" Lawrence asked Walters. "I get it, I do it too. We all do it. ... But I think when it comes to the media, the media needs to take responsibility for the effect that it has on our younger generation, on these girls that are watching these television shows and picking up how to talk and how to be cool. ... So then all of a sudden being funny is making fun of the girl that's wearing an ugly dress."

"And the word fat!" she added. "I just think it should be illegal to call somebody fat on TV. I mean, if we're regulating cigarettes and sex and cuss words because of the effect it has on our younger generation, why aren't we regulating things like calling people fat?"

The 23-year-old has spoken out against the constructed image "norms" in Hollywood before. Lawrence -- whose body became the central focus of critics when she was first cast as Katniss Everdeen in the "Hunger Games" flicks -- has previously refused to lose weight for roles because of the message it may send to female viewers.

"We have the ability to control this image that young girls are going to be seeing," she said during promotions for "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," per The Guardian. "They see enough of this body that they will never be able to obtain and it's an amazing opportunity to rid ourselves of that in this industry."

The blogosphere recently came to the actress' defense over a major Photoshop fail.

Last week, a GIF of Lawrence's untouched and retouched cover photo for the June 2011 issue of Flare magazine made the viral rounds. She was digitally altered to appear seemingly thinner with protruding collarbones and more sunken cheeks. Bloggers were outraged over the unnecessary editing.
