While recent award shows have been host to a sea of Latinos, the upcoming Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 12, 2014 in Beverly Hills, Calif. seem to be a little more than lacking.
The nominations roster for the 71st edition of the Golden Globe Awards was released a couple of weeks ago in L.A and surprisingly not many Hispanic last names made the cut.
Household name Sofia Vergara is one of the few names that did nab a Golden Globe nomination. This is her 4th time being nominated in the category of Best Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini Series or Television Film, though Vergara has never taken the Golden Globe to her ‘casa.’
Still, Vergara shared her excitement saying:
“My Golden Globes are still going strong!…Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for this nomination and for nominating the cast of Modern Family. It’s truly an honor.”
The Latino behind Gravity and a Guatemalan Hunk
Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron must feel just as excited as the overly enthusiastic Colombian actress. He was nominated for a Golden Globe in the category of Best Director for his work on the film ”Gravity.”
Although Cuaron’s mother didn’t support his dream of becoming a director or even his desires to pursue an education in cinematography, he did it anyway.
He got his start at the Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematograficos in Mexico City where he got expelled for producing a short film in English.
His big break came in the form of the movie “Love in the Time of Hysteria” (1991) which won many awards in the Toronto Film Festival and made Hollywood producers notice his work.
In 2003, Cuaron was nominated for an Oscar for Best Writing and Original Screenplay for the controversial film Y Tu Mama Tambien and in 2007 was nominated for another Oscar in the category of Best Writing and Adapted Screenplay for his work in the film "Children of Men."
Now, Cuaron is back in the nominees circle at the Golden Globe Awards thanks to his directing talent in Gravity. The film itself also up for Best Motion Picture – Drama.
Oscar Isaac, a Guatemalan-Cuban raised in Miami also received a Golden Globe nod for his first stand out role as Llewyn Davis in the Coen Brothers’ film “Inside Llewyn Davis” and though he’s not yet a household name what’s to say he won’t take home the award for Best Actor in a Motion picture.
But where are the others?
Parks & Recreation, starring Aubrey Plaza, is nominated for Best Comedy Series and Brooklyn Nine Nine, featuring Melissa Fumero, is up for Best Comedy Series.
American Hustle, which also features Latino stars Michael Pena and Louis C.K., is up for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Yet, Vergara, Cuaron and Isaac are the only Latinos with stand out nominations at the 2014 Golden Globes.
Which leaves us asking where are the Latinos at the upcoming Golden Globes Awards ceremony?
