This week brought several big headlines in extreme weather news:

  • Snow barreled down on the East Coast from North Carolina into New England, causing school closings, grounded flights and frigid temperatures.

  • A storm northwest of Hawaii brought hurricane-force winds and the biggest swell that the state has seen in decades.
  • The California drought -- the worst since 1895 -- continues as a high pressure ridge remains offshore and blocks typical winter storms that bring precipitation.
  • Three people died and many more were injured in a 40 car-and-truck pile-up in Indiana due to blizzard-like conditions.
