CarMax Super Bowl Ad Tips Hat To 'Rudy,' Shows Us How Awesome Life Would Be With More Slow Claps

Super Bowl ad watchers apparently love an underdog.

Online used-car seller CarMax posted a long version of its Super Bowl ad relatively early (Jan. 21), and it's paying off. The spot, inspired by the little-guy-makes-good film "Rudy," had passed 700,000 hits on YouTube as of Wednesday.

In the commercial, a satisfied CarMax customer drives off the lot, serenaded with a show-of-respect "slow clap." The clap from various community members builds in momentum as the customer cruises through his neighborhood.

The ad plays off the slow clap that fellow Notre Dame football teammates used to greet walk-on Rudy Ruettiger during practice in the film about the undersized Ruettiger's real-life quest to play for Notre Dame. (You can watch that scene below.)

The actor who played Rudy, Sean Astin, gets a fun cameo in CarMax's ad, but the nostalgia will have to work its mojo on gameday, too. While CarMax doesn't advertise a particular auto make, it still will be competing for attention with ads from Kia, Toyota, Hyundai, Ford, Audi, Jaguar and Volkswagen, reported.
