Ireen Wust, Bisexual Dutch Speedskater, Says She 'Cuddled' Vladimir Putin After Winning Gold Medal

Bisexual Speedskater: I 'Cuddled' With Putin After My Olympic Victory In Sochi

Openly bisexual Dutch speedskater Ireen Wust says she got a surprise congratulatory gesture from none other than Russian President Vladimir Putin after her Olympic victory in Sochi.

"He congratulated me and asked if everything was OK in Russia and I congratulated him on (Russian speedskater) Olga Graf, of course, for her third place (in the 3,000 meters)," she is quoted by ABC News and a number of other media outlets as saying. "He was happy to see me, but then he had to leave again. But I cuddled him."

Putin's move has made headlines, particularly in the wake of the international controversy surrounding Russia's "gay propaganda" laws.

GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis and HuffPost Gay Voices Executive Editor Noah Michelson sounded off on Wust's statement in an appearance on HuffPost Live this week.

CORRECTION: The original version of this article referred to Wuss as being openly gay. She identifies as bisexual and is currently in a relationship with a man, Slate reported.
