Jerry Nadler: Republicans Who Voted For Food Stamp Cuts 'Just Want People To Starve'

Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) had some choice words for his Republican colleagues on Sunday, lashing out at those who voted for the 2014 farm bill and its associated food stamp cuts.

In an interview with videographer Shimon Gifter, Nadler accused the GOP of making food stamp fraud an excuse. He voted against the farm bill, citing both cuts to the program, and Congress' failure to extend unemployment insurance as reasons behind his decision.

"If the Republicans wanted to say, let's put in this extra protection or that extra protection, that would be something else," said Nadler in a clip posted on YouTube. "But they're just using that as an excuse. They just want people to starve."

Signed into law on Friday by President Barack Obama, the farm bill cuts food stamps by $800 million a year -- which the AP noted was one-fifth of what the Republican-led House was looking for. In a separate report, the AP also added that about 15 percent of the money in the bill goes to farmers, while most of the rest will go recipients of food stamps.
