If you have Philly Steak and Cheese Hot Pockets in your freezer, you might want to check the batch codes on the boxes.
Nestle is announcing a voluntary recall of the products because they may include meat that was involved in the massive recall earlier this month of 8.7 million pounds of meat produced by California-based Rancho Feeding Corporation.
The following batch numbers are affected by the recall:
Hot Pockets Philly Steak and Cheese in 8x9 oz: 3021544512, 3029544512, 3197544512 and 3240544512.
Hot Pockets Philly Steak and Cheese in 4x45 oz: 3022544513, 3191544512, 3224544512, 3254544512 and 3268544512.
Hot Pockets Philly Steak and Cheese in 4x22.5 oz: 3197544512 and 3240544512.
Hot Pockets Croissant Crust Philly Steak and Cheese in 8x9 oz: 3211544512, 3248544512 and 3283544512.
Nestle said in the recall announcement that while it did not buy meat from Rancho directly, some meat affected by the Rancho recall was used at a facility that produces Hot Pockets in California. People who may have purchased Hot Pockets products affected by the recall can return them for a full refund, or call Nestle Consumer Services at 800-392-4057.
While there have been no illnesses linked with the Rancho recall, the United States Department of Agriculture noted that the recall was initiated because Rancho "processed diseased and unsound animals and carried out these activities without the benefit or full benefit of federal inspection. Thus, the products are adulterated, because they are unsound, unwholesome or otherwise are unfit for human food and must be removed from commerce."
