Most Important Thing To Remember When Dealing With A Loved One's Addiction, From Valerie Bertinelli (VIDEO)

When dealing with a loved one’s addiction, Hot In Cleveland actress Valerie Bertinelli had some great advice to share.

Valerie told us that the most important thing is to make sure that person knows they are not alone. “You need help, whether it’s medication, a therapist or a good pastor, but you can’t do this alone,” she said, referencing her experiences with ex-husband Eddie Van Halen, who struggled with drug addiction for years.

Another piece of advice: don’t take your loved one’s drug addiction personally. It’s a struggle between your loved one and a substance, not your loved one and you.

Valerie doesn’t believe in the “tough love” method of helping someone through an addiction. When her ex-husband was struggling with his addiction, she stuck by his side for years. Even though their marriage ultimately did not succeed, he has now been sober for 8 years.
