Comic Illustrations Perfectly Capture The Daily Anxieties Of A Woman

Katie So's monochromatic comic illustrations are meant to be a personal evaluation of one woman's six-month period of "self-loathing." A bout of "pathetic," "poor-me" analysis. The title of the series says it all: she's "Destined For Misery."

But the darkly surreal imagery, illuminating terrifying scenarios like being buried alive or spending the majority of one's life in the fetal position, reflect on universal feelings of doubt, jealousy and remorse. Almost every woman -- or person -- who's dealt with breakups, career fluctuations or fits of insomnia can relate to the cleverly simple drawings, rendered in black and white lines that transition from clean cartoons to grotesque sketches.

"I was doing fine until I realized you were doing much more fine than me," Vancouver-based So muses in one panel, accompanied by an image of a woman's melting visage. "I'm jealous of my former self, though I'm not sure if she's real," she adds in another.
