Proof That Love Is Better The Second Time Around

We all have the one who got away. For Jane Mattson, it was Steve Shapiro.

After pairing off in temple youth group, Mattson and Shapiro got engaged in the late '60s, when they were 22 and 23-years-old, respectively.

"We had a depth of intimacy that is not usual in young people," Mattson, now 66, says of the relationship.

The engagement was short-lived, though; always a free spirit, Shapiro feared marrying so young would tie him down.

"It came out of the blue when he said we had to part. I was devastated," Mattson recalls. "I probably put my feelings for him in a little box."

Forty-four years and a few marriages to other people later, the couple is giving marriage another shot. They wed on April 22.

"We have wonderful chance to go ahead and really complete the circle that was started many years ago," Shaprio, now 67, says. "Our time wasn't in '68 -- our time is now."
