Every year People magazine announces the person that they believe to be the most beautiful in the world. This year’s winner was Lupita Nyong’o. Could this be a societal milestone?

Previous recipients include Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé, so it is not the first time that a minority woman has won the title. But in a world where debates about racism and colourism rage on, women of Lupita’s complexion are hardly ever hailed as the most beautiful. So does this mean that things are finally changing? Are we moving away from celebrating European standards of beauty i.e. blonde hair and blue eyes?
