Mariel Hemingway's 'Running From Crazy' Documentary Premieres On OWN (VIDEO)

What Family Tragedy Has Taught Mariel Hemingway About Love

As an Oscar-nominated actress and bestselling author, Mariel Hemingway says she knows how some people perceive her. "Tall blonde, no problems -- what does she have to say to me?" the granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway says in "Running From Crazy," a documentary that explores her famous family.

But behind the Hemingway name is a family past plagued by dark secrets, with a troubling history of suicide and mental illness.

On her search for a deeper understanding of the tragedies in her family, Mariel says she has learned how to live. "There's no one outside of yourself that can help you or love you the way you need -- except you," she says.

So while some people may still see her as the "tall blonde," Mariel wants to show another side of her. "I know a lot about how people can live a better life. How they can be happy, how they can not fear stuff that I've feared my entire life," she says.

"Running From Crazy" premieres on Sunday, April 27 at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.
