After more than 6,000 episodes, "Wheel Of Fortune" welcomed its first-ever special needs contestant. On Wednesday, April 30, Arizona man Trenton "Trent" Girone, made history, solving the puzzle for "A Smashing Success" -- "a fitting answer for the reaction he'd receive from viewers," as WHTR Channel 13 put it.
#TeamTrent began trending during the episode, as viewers tweeted in support of Girone. The 21-year-old, who has overcome nine brain surgeries and has both Aspergers and Tourette Syndrome, had always dreamed of making an appearance on "Wheel Of Fortune."
Trent did not win the game, but as his supporters noted, there was plenty of victory just in being on the show. "I decided to be a contestant because I have been a fan of the show since I was at least two years of age," he wrote in a blog post for the "Wheel Of Fortune" website. "I love the show and wanted to be part of its history. I thought I would do a great job at solving puzzles."
