Alabama Man Accidentally Shoots Son, Claims He was Trying To Scare Him, Police Say

An Alabama man claims he was only trying to scare his son when he accidentally shot the boy to death, according to police.

Sexton Adams, 55, told authorities that he unintentionally fired his .38 Special revolver when his son -- who he described as acting in a "bizarre and angry manner" -- returned home at about 2 a.m., Friday, according to Call News. Adams said he only intended to cock the weapon, but it discharged, piercing his son in the stomach.

“It’s just a very tragic thing,” Washington County Sheriff Richard Stringer said. “The man killed his own son. It just doesn’t get much worse than that.”

Darius Adams, 17, was rushed to the University of South Alabama Hospital in Mobile. Adams, a student and football player at McIntosh High School, was pronounced dead at 8:10 a.m., according to AL.com.

One neighbor said he could not imagine what the Adams family was experiencing.

“I don’t know what went on, but I know Sexton tried to raise him right. He definitely tried to raise him right. I do know that,” Edward Thomas told Fox10tv. “He’s a good man. He don’t bother nobody. He don’t do nothing but work and tend to his own business.”

According to reports, the father has not been charged in the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
