Where there’s a Western spoof, there’s sure to be some comical commentary on the border.
So it’s not surprising that Seth MacFarlane (“Ted,” “Family Guy”) follows through as he returns to the silver screen with “A Million Ways To Die In The West.” In a new bonus clip, two of the film’s characters add a dose of irony as they cross into Mexico to start anew.
MacFarlane not only wrote and directed the comedy but also stars as the cowardly sheep farmer Albert Stark, who doesn’t know how to shoot a gun and loses his girlfriend Louise (Amanda Seyfried) when he withdraws from a duel.
Louise and her new love interest Foy (Neil Patrick Harris), a smug moustache aficionado and shopkeeper, journey to Mexico to “make a fresh start” in the new clip. With the help of some Mexican bystanders, the film turns the tables on present day notions of migration and border security. (Watch The Clip Above)
It won’t be the first time that MacFarlane tackles border issues. In November, Deadline reported that the actor and director’s new cartoon series “Bordertown” had been picked up by Fox.
The animated comedy will premiere in the Spring of 2015 and tackle the United States’ demographic shift with the help of its protagonists, a border patrol agent afraid of cultural change and a thriving Mexican immigrant. The two neighbors live in a fictional bordertown and the families’ paths are bound to cross.
While some were skeptical of MacFarlane undertaking the topic of cultural change in the U.S., many were pleased when chicano artist Lalo Alcaraz was enlisted as a writer and consultant on the project.
“I know people hope the show is good, and that the portrayals of Latinos and immigrants aren’t the same old Hollywood crap. So do I. That’s why I signed on,” Alcaraz said in a post on Poncho.com.
“A Million Ways To Die In The West” premieres nationwide on May 30.
