Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) won the Republican nomination to seek reelection on Tuesday, the Associated Press reports.
Branstad, who is the longest-serving governor in U.S. history, defeated conservative political activist Tom Hoefling as he seeks to serve an unprecedented sixth term in the state.
The governor will face state Sen. Jack Hatch, who ran unopposed in the Democratic primary, in November. HuffPost Pollster, which combines all publicly available polling data, shows the governor leading Hatch by nine percentage points.
Though Branstad enjoys a high approval rating, his administration has recently been forced to defend itself after a series of smaller scandals were exposed.
