Truck Driver Viewing Porn Kills Woman, 20, In Collision

In a tragedy that the judge called "utterly avoidable," a British truck driver was sentenced to five years in prison for killing a 20-year-old bride-to-be as he watched porn on his cell phone, the Express and Star reported.

Ian Glover was clicking through images of naked women when his truck, traveling at least 50 mph, flew over a highway barrier and struck Laura Jane Thomas on July 21 near Shrewsbury, England, according to the newspaper's account of the court proceedings. Thomas died en route to the hospital. Her fiance, Lewis Pagett, was also injured. The two had pulled over to the side of the road after a breakdown and had taken refuge behind a barrier. They were on their way to the beach.

Glover's lawyer told the Shrewsbury Crown Court his client was "deeply ashamed."

"Laura and I were looking forward to planning our wedding together -- instead, I ended up planning her funeral," Pagett said in the Mirror.

According to a report by the Staffordshire Newsletter after the accident, Laura and Lewis got engaged the previous Christmas. Her sister Gemma told the outlet, "She had a lively and sparkling personality which lit up any room that she entered."

Laura had worked as a teaching assistant for children with special needs and aspired to becoming a full-time teacher, according to the report.
