Spain saved its best for last at the 2014 World Cup. Unfortunately, it was too late to make a difference.

The defending World Cup champions defeated Australia 3-0 in their final group-stage game at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba on Monday. Spain had been eliminated from contention even before kickoff with losses in its opening two matches. With three goals against Australia, Spain matched its total from its losses to the Netherlands and Chile.

Given the start in the last international match of his career, David Villa scored the opening goal with a dazzling backheel finish in the first half. Villa, 32, had been left on the bench in Spain's two group-stage defeats.
