Obama: 'We Broke The ISIL Seige Of Mt. Sinjar' In Iraq

President Barack Obama gave a statement Thursday from Martha's Vineyard, where he's on vacation, addressing the U.S. military's efforts to help Yazidi refugees on Mount Sinjar in Iraq.

On Wednesday, a small group of special forces flew into Mount Sinjar to assess the military situation and the potential for a civilian evacuation route. Based on their assessment, Obama said it was unlikely there would be need for more U.S. airdrops in Iraq.

“We broke the ISIL siege of Mount Sinjar,” Obama said.

"We do not expect there to be an additional operation to evacuate people off the mountain, and it's unlikely we'll need to continue humanitarian air drops on the mountain," Obama continued.

Obama said airstrikes against militants will continue.

"I could not be prouder of the men and women of our military who carried out this humanitarian operation almost flawlessly," Obama continued.
