Former chairman of the Arizona Board of Regents Fred DuVal (D) was defeated by Arizona State Treasurer and former Cold Stone Creamery CEO Doug Ducey (R) in the race to succeed Gov. Jan Brewer (R).

DuVal received the endorsement of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly. Former President Bill Clinton held a fundraiser for DuVal, who served in Clinton's administration and with the former president's re-election campaign.

In a candidate debate, DuVal called Ducey's plan to cut state income taxes "tooth-fairy math."
