Egypt Mistakenly Commemorates Suez Canal With A Stamp Picturing Panama

With the multibillion dollar expansion of the Suez Canal underway, Egypt proudly issued a commemorative stamp to pay tribute to the historical waterway.

But, as it turns out, the team commissioned to design the stamp showcased the wrong canal.

In an embarrassing gaffe, the stamp appears to depict the distinct double-waterway of the Panama Canal, instead of the 145-year-old Egyptian canal.

The mistake was repeatedly mocked on social media, with some tweets showing a side-by-side comparison of the postage and a photo of the Panama Canal to drive home the similarities between the images.

The Cairo Post notes that Egypt's Postal Authority originally denied the mistake and suggested that the image was photoshopped in an interview with Masrawy, an Egyptian publication. However, the Ministry of Communications has since halted printing of the erroneous stamp. An investigation is also underway to find the root cause of the mistake.
