This poor dog was found stuck to the ground near a construction site in northwestern India, encrusted in a solid coat of tar.

A passerby who saw him called the rescue group Animal Aid Unlimited, which cares for street animals. Volunteers brought the pup back to AAU's sanctuary, then spent two days rubbing vegetable oil on the dog in order to loosen the tar.

The rescue took place in mid-August. Get ready for your tear ducts to loosen when you see how happy this pup is now:

"There was no way he could have come out of his own, without any intervention," Claire Abrams, co-founder of Animal Aid Unlimited, told CNN.

Abrams says that the dog has been vaccinated and is recovering nicely at Animal Aid's sanctuary in Udaipur, where he now lives among the group's dogs, donkeys, cows, cats and other resident animals, many of whom have their own remarkable, heartbreaking rescue stories.
