A Missouri state legislator who represents the city of Ferguson said Wednesday that shots were fired in her direction when she got out of her car in the St. Louis suburb. A man was wounded in the shooting and was hospitalized, police said.

Maria Chappelle Nadal, a state senator who was tear-gassed during protests that followed the police shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown in August, said she was getting out of her car when shots were fired toward her. She said on Twitter that the shots were fired “from the trees or apartment complex behind the parking lot” where she parked.

Nadal told HuffPost she felt like a "deer in headlights" when she heard the gunfire and remains shaken.

The shots did not appear to target Nadal.

Joel Currier, a reporter with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, said on Twitter that the shooting took place on Sharondale Circle. Sharondale Circle is just off the street where many of the protests took place in Ferguson, behind office space rented by the nonprofit group HealSTL, formed in the wake of Brown's shooting and the subsequent protests.
