Today, the Board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will consider our 30/10 initiative to build the 12 Measure R transit projects in ten years instead of 30. I can't think of a better way to recognize Earth Day than to advance these clean fueled transit projects.

These rail and bus projects will transform Los Angeles from the car capital of the world to a model of a big, expansive city where people can get where they need to go quickly and efficiently using transit.

Every year, 30/10 will:

  • reduce emissions by more than 500,000 pounds

  • save 10.3 million gallons of gasoline
  • help Angelenos drive 208 million fewer miles
  • Oh, and it will also create 166,000 jobs.

The benefits of 30/10 are undeniable, and on this, the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, I hope the Board will vote to support our effort to secure federal backing for 30/10, and help us deliver a sustainable transit network in the next decade.

    Happy Earth Day everyone!
