Dr. Andrea Sullivan

Author and private practitioner in Washington, DC

Dr. Andrea Sullivan received a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) from Bastyr University in Seattle, WA in 1986. She also completed advanced courses in homeopathic medicine in the US, India, and Europe. She continues to study with homeopathic physicians from Mumbai (Bombay), India, and she is a diplomat with the Homeopathic Academy of Naturopathic Physicians. Dr. Sullivan has a private practice in Washington, DC.

In 1976, Dr. Sullivan became the first African-American to receive a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in sociology/criminology. She has taught at Howard University, American University, and the University of Maryland. She was subsequently appointed as the Assistant Director of the Administration of Justice for the National Urban League in New York City. She later worked as a special assistant for urban policy for Patricia Roberts Harris, who served as the US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in President Carter’s administration.

Dr. Sullivan is a frequent guest on radio and major network television. She currently appears on the Jay King Network as a contributor to Glass House Blog Radio, The Nicole Mason Show, and Heart of A Woman with Lorraine Harrell. In 2014, she was the guest speaker for a series of webinars sponsored by The League of Black Women. Her other appearances include the following programs:

Excerpts from Dr. Sullivan’s successful first book, A Path to Healing: A Guide to Wellness for Body, Mind, and Soul (Doubleday, April 1998), appeared in Essence Magazine in July 1998, followed by several feature stories on Dr. Sullivan throughout the years. Dr. Sullivan has written for Prevention, Essence, Heart and Soul, and Health Quest publications.

Dr. Sullivan is a contributing author to Heart to Heart: The Path To Wellness (Alska Publishing, 2015) by Dr. John Demartini of the Demartini Institute and Bob Doyle, who was featured in the book and the movie, The Secret. She was also a contributor to the NAACP Image Award-nominated book Health First (Smiley, 2012), for which she appeared in a roundtable discussion. She is interviewed and quoted for the July 2015 issue of Ebony Magazine for the article on Homeopathy, “ Elevate: Body Heal Thyself”.
Dr. Sullivan has lectured on naturopathic and homeopathic medicine throughout the US and Canada, including The George Washington University, Georgetown University, the American Lung Association, the National Institutes of Health, the 2008, 2009, and 2011 National Medical Association Annual Conferences, and the AmeriHealth Caritas Pennsylvania Conference. In 2013, Aetna Insurance recognized Dr. Sullivan with a feature in the company’s 2013 African-American History Calendar.

Dr. Sullivan is a founding member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and served as president of the DC Association of Naturopathic Physicians for eight years. In 2001, she became the first naturopathic physician appointed to the Board of Medicine for DC. She served in this position for six years until she accepted an appointment to serve as chairperson of the Naturopathic Medical Board for the District of Columbia.
