Executive Director, Medical Board of California

In her current position as Executive Director for the Medical Board of California, Barb Johnston provides the leadership to assure public protection of consumers through the proper licensing of the 125,000 physicians in the state and enforcement of the Medical Practice Act. She works closely with several other state agencies including the Attorney General’s Health Quality Enforcement Section on issues before the Board. Barb is the first woman and the only registered nurse to be appointed to this position in the California Medical Board.

Barb has been working on health information technology programs since 1995 and was the Executive Director for the California Telemedicine & eHealth Center before joining the Medical Board.

Barb serves on both the board of the American Telemedicine Association and also the California Emerging Technology Fund to promote the expansion of health IT to improve access to health services for underserved communities statewide.
