After 12 years of work, Derek Cianfrance recently completed BLUE VALENTINE starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. Prior to that, he directed numerous documentaries and television commercials. In 2003 Sundance awarded him best Cinematography for his work on the dramatic feature QUATTRO NOZA. His student feature, BROTHER TIED, won numerous international awards and premiered at Sundance 1998. Cianfrance studied under avant-garde filmmakers Stan Brakhage and Phil Solomon. He is preparing to shoot THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES with Ryan Gosling this summer, and has just sold a series to HBO which will give new meaning to the phrase "character development."
