Doug Shafer is president of Shafer Vineyards in Napa Valley. In 2010 he and his father John Shafer received the James Beard Foundation Award for "Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professionals." In November 2012 University of California Press will release Doug's book "A Vineyard in Napa," which tells of the launch and evolution of the family's winery and of the transformation of Napa Valley from a rural backwater in the early 1970s to the wine region it is today.
