Dr. Robert Garofalo
Division Chief of Adolescent Medicine and Director of the Gender, Sexuality and HIV Prevention Center, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago
Dr. Robert Garofalo, M.D., M.P.H., is the Division Chief of Adolescent Medicine at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and the Director of the hospital’s Gender, Sexuality and HIV Prevention Center. In this role he co-directs of the new gender and sexual development clinical program at Lurie Children’s. This is the first comprehensive program providing multidisciplinary care to gender-nonconforming children and adolescents in the Midwest.
Dr. Garofalo is an associate professor of pediatrics and preventative medicine at Northwestern University’s Fienberg School of Medicine. He received his B.S. from Duke University in biological psychology (1988), his M.D. from NYU School of Medicine (1992), and his M.P.H. from Harvard School of Public Health (1999).
Dr. Garofalo completed a pediatric residency at Children Hospital of Philadelphia and a fellowship in pediatric advocacy and adolescent medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Garofalo is a national authority on LGBT health issues, adolescent sexuality, and HIV clinical care and prevention. He is the former president of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association and a current board member of Advocates for Youth.
In 2011, Dr. Garofalo founded Fred Says, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity supporting the care of HIV-positive teens.
