Emma Adam

Researcher and expert on stress and sleep and their effects on the health and wellbeing of children, adolescents and adults.

Emma Adam is Professor of Human Development and Social Policy in the School of Education and Social Policy and a Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University. She received her PhD in Child Psychology from the University of Minnesota and an MA in Public Policy from the University of Chicago. Adam is a developmental psychologist/developmental psychobiologist, and an expert on social and developmental influences on stress physiology in children, adolescents and adults. Her key emphasis is on understanding everyday factors affecting stress hormones such as cortisol, and studying the implications of variations in cortisol for mental and physical health outcomes. She also studies everyday factors affecting sleep, and the implications of variations in sleep for emotional and physical health and academic attainment. Adam is currently a Public Voices fellow with the OpEd Project.
