john a. powell is the Director of the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society and Professor of Law at UC Berkeley

john a. powell is Director of the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society and the Robert D. Haas Chancellor’s Chair in Equity and Inclusion at the University of California, Berkeley, where he is also a professor of Law, African American, and Ethnic Studies. john was previously Executive Director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at The Ohio State University. He also served as the founder and director of the Institute for Race and Poverty at the University of Minnesota. john led the development of an opportunity-based model that connects affordable housing to racialized spaces in education, health, health care, and employment. john regularly consults with philanthropic organizations seeking to create agendas for racial equity and inclusion across many areas of difference. He serves on the Board of the Philanthropic Initiative for Racial Equity, the Poverty & Race Research Action Council, and the TIDES Foundation. A prolific author and speaker, john frequently writes and speaks on issues of marginality and structural inclusion through the lens of othering and belonging. john’s most recent book is Racing to Justice: Transforming our Concepts of Self and Other to Build an Inclusive Society.
