Herb Alpert is a musician, artist and philanthropist. The legendary trumpeter who this year won his 9th Grammy for his new album Steppin' Out, is also the co-founder of A&M records, regarded as the most successful independent record label in history. In 1982 he and his wife, singer Lani Hall Alpert, founded the Herb Alpert Foundation which has given over $130 million in support of the arts and education programs, as well as programs that embrace a philosophy that promotes compassion and well-being. The Herb Alpert Award in the Arts, currently celebrating its 20th anniversary awards an unrestricted $75,000 prize annually to five mid-career, risk-taking artists working in five different disciplines. As an artist, Alpert's renowned bronze Black Totems can be seen throughout Los Angeles and near Lincoln Center in New York city.
