The Dartmouth Professor of German Studies and Comparative Literature

Irene Kacandes holds an endowed chair in German Studies and Comparative Literature at Dartmouth College. Author or editor of numerous volumes on a wide range of subjects like orality and literacy and generational traumatic memory, her co-written reflection on mortality, Let’s Talk about Death: Asking the Questions that Profoundly Change the Way We Live and Die, appeared in late 2015 with Prometheus Books. She is currently co-editing an anthology on innovative approaches to studying Eastern Europe and writing a monograph on co-witnessing since the Nazi Judeocide. She edits the book series “Interdisciplinary German Cultural Studies” at de Gruyter Verlag and is President of the German Studies Association. She is a Public Voices Fellow of the Op-Ed Project.
