Jasmine M. El-Gamal

Jasmine M. El-Gamal is a a Truman National Security Fellow and a civil servant in the U.S. Government working on countering violent extremism issues. Born in New York and raised in Egypt, Jasmine has spent her professional career building bridges and fostering communication and cooperation between seemingly incompatible sides. Jasmine served as a translator with the 82nd Airborne in Southern Iraq in 2003 and went on to work across various locations in the Middle East. From 2008-2013, she served as the Iraq, Lebanon and Syria Country Director in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
Jasmine is a believer in the power of stories and personal narrative as a tool for countering extremism. Her opinion pieces have been published in Time Magazine and Talking Points Memo, among others. She is a graduate of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service.
