I'm a writer, a teacher and a traveler. I have three adorable grand children, take long walks with my golden retriever, love most things French, follow politics excessively, and, when it gets too depressing, play guitar and sing. I've spent my career teaching and practicing journalism, and have authored or co-authored four books on writing. I was the first chair of Emerson College's Department of Journalism and served as the deputy city editor and acting city editor of the San Jose Mercury News, where, as special beats editor, I was part of the city desk staff awarded a Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1990. I've also won a national teaching award from the Poynter Institute for Media Studies.
