John J. Mariani, M.D.

Dr. John Mariani is an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University and a research psychiatrist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. After receiving his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine and completing his psychiatry residency at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, Dr. Mariani completed a two-year addiction psychiatry research fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center. He is the director of the Columbia University Medical Center Substance Treatment and Research Service (STARS). STARS is a busy clinical research service testing medication treatments for substance use disorders. Dr. Mariani was the recipient of a K-23 Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Reward from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, as well as an R21 award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to study the use of gabapentin for the treatment of alcohol dependence and an R01 award from the National Institute of Drug Abuse to study the use of quetiapine for the treatment of cannabis dependence. His research has primarily focused on investigating novel pharmacotherapies for addictive disorders, including treatments for cocaine, alcohol, and cannabis use disorders. Dr. Mariani is the author of a number of original research articles, as well as review articles and book chapters (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=Search&db=pubmed&term=Mariani%20JJ). In addition Dr. Mariani maintains an active clinical practice, primarily treating patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric conditions.
