Karabekir Akkoyunlu is a research associate of the Centre for Southeast European Studies, University of Graz, Austria, and a visiting researcher at the Escola Nacional de Administração Pública (ENAP), Brasília, Brazil. He completed his PhD in comparative politics at the London School of Economics, where his research focused on sociopolitical change in Turkey and Iran. He studied Persian at Isfahan University and taught courses on Middle East politics and theories of democracy and democratization at the LSE. In 2011 - 2012, he was a research associate at the Southeast European Studies at Oxford (SEESOX). Before entering academia, he worked as a political analyst in London and as an English teacher in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He holds a B.A. in History and International Relations from Brown University and an M.Phil in International Relations from the University of Cambridge.
