Katherine Kallinis

Co-founder, Georgetown Cupcakes

Georgetown Cupcake was founded by sisters Katherine Kallinis and Sophie LaMontagne. Katherine and Sophie traded careers in fashion and private equity to pursue something a little sweeter – their passion for artful cupcakes. Both lifelong bakers inspired by their grandmothers, Katherine and Sophie opened Georgetown Cupcake in February 2008 as D.C.’s first and only cupcakery. The quaint shop was initially tucked away on Potomac Street, before moving to the bustling M Street area, attracting many tourists, locals, and even celebrities. While their recipe is kept secret, it is no secret to the rest of the world how deliciously fresh and chic these cupcakes are. Georgetown Cupcake bakes continuously throughout the day from their small kitchen to ensure customers are enjoying a cupcake that has just been baked and frosted. Their cupcakes are baked fresh daily and are never kept from the prior day. Made daily with only the finest ingredients – including Valrhona chocolate imported from France, Madagascar bourbon vanilla, Plugra butter, Callebaut chocolate and fresh fruit – Katherine and Sophie pride themselves on their freshly baked, preservative-free cupcakes topped with handmade fondant decoration.

Opened on February 14, 2008 with nothing but a Kinko’s sign in the window, Georgetown Cupcake has developed a cult following in the Washington D.C. area, complete with a daily line of loyal fans wrapped around the block. Georgetown Cupcake just announced the opening of their third location in NYC’s SoHo neighborhood…111 Mercer Street in Winter 2012! Georgetown Cupcake now employs over 200 people and bakes 5,000 to 10,000 cupcakes a day. The assortment is ever-changing and includes seasonal and monthly flavors. Everyday, 15 cupcake flavors are offered, 9 classic and 6 special cupcakes, with an assortment that changes daily (their customers are known to frequently check the online schedule). The option of advance order, special order and customization/personalization is available for birthdays, weddings and other events that call for sweet treats.

Georgetown Cupcake now distributes their delicious cupcakes even further than their Georgetown and Bethesda locations, making their indulgences available nationwide by offering convenient overnight shipping at www.shop.georgetowncupcake.com. Freshly baked cupcakes made with the finest ingredients can be shipped anywhere in the 48 contiguous states. Packaged in a bright pink box, Georgetown Cupcake will arrive fresh (and perfectly frosted and decorated). Sophie and Katherine are the stars of DC Cupcakes on TLC – the second season will premier on February 25, 2011 at 10/9c. Their cupcakes have been enjoyed by the Jonas Brothers, Kelly Rutherford, Owen Wilson and Russell Crowe among others and Georgetown Cupcake was the winner of The Washington Post’s “Cupcake Wars.” The cupcakery has been raved about in The New York Times and Washingtonian, and Katherine and Sophie have also shared their tasty cupcakes on The Today Show, The Rachael Ray Show and The Martha Stewart Show.
