Ambassador of Brazil to the United States

Born in July 1955, Ambassador Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado is a career diplomat.

Before his assignment as Ambassador of Brazil to the United States, Ambassador Figueiredo worked as Minister of External Relations of Brazil (2013-2014) and acted as Executive Secretary of the Rio+20 National Commission.

At the Ministry of External Relations, he has previously served as Under Secretary for Environment, Energy, Science and Technology (2011-2013) and acted as Director of the Department for Environment and Special Affairs (2005-2011), as well as Head of the Division on Environmental Policy and Sustainable Development (2002-2004) and of the Division on Sea, Antarctic and Outer Space Affairs (1995-1996).

Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado was posted to the Brazilian Mission to the UN (1986-1989), to the Embassy in Santiago (1989-1992), to the Embassy in Washington (1996-1999), to the Embassy in Ottawa (1999-2002), to the Brazilian Mission to UNESCO (2003-2005) and served as Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York (2013).

He participated, and in many times headed, Brazilian Delegations in several multilateral meetings since 1981 in the areas of environment and sustainable development, disarmament and international security, law of the sea, Antarctica, outer space, health and labour. He led the Brazilian negotiating team for many years in international meetings and conferences on environmental issues, especially those on climate change and biodiversity.

He holds a degree in Law from the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
