David W. Niesel, PhD

Dr. Niesel is a microbiologist who has been working on the pathogenesis of Gram and Gram negative pathogens in animal models for more than 30 years. He has had NIH, NASA and commercial support for his work. He holds 4 patents including one pending for a rapid novel sensitive method for antibiotic resistance detection. He is dedicated to training the next generation of the biomedical workforce and is the PI of a NIGMS funded Post-baccalaureate research and training program (PREP) and a past NIGMS-funded Bridges to the Doctorate grant. A major focus in his career has been in educating the general public about advances in biomedical science and medicine. He is the host and producer of Medical Discovery News, a weekly radio show that reaches people in 17 states through >110 radio station and five newspapers. He also teaches at the intersection of science with law, ethics and society as a member of the Institute for Medical Humanities. These communication and teaching activities position him well to participate in this project.
