Rob Kaufelt

Third-generation grocer and owner of Murray's Cheese

Rob is the owner of New York’s oldest cheese shop, Murray’s Cheese. A third generation grocer, he ran the family's supermarket chain in the 1980s. He moved to the Village in 1990 and has been at the helm of Murray’s ever since.

Murray’s flagship stores are in Greenwich Village and in Grand Central Terminal. The online business (www.murrayscheese.com) ships cheese and gifts nationwide. Through Murray’s partnership with Kroger, you can now find Murray’s Cheese counters at over 75 stores, from Atlanta to Seattle, Dallas to Portland.

A frequent writer and educator on cheese and specialty foods, Rob was profiled in the New Yorker and authored The Murray’s Cheese Handbook (Random House, 2006). He splits his time between Soho and an eighteenth century farmhouse in Stockton, New Jersey with his wife, Nina Planck, the country’s leading expert on farmer’s markets and real food, and their three small children.
